Target Information
MEF2C is a transcription activator binding specifically to the MEF2 element in regulatory regions of many muscle-specific genes. It controls cardiac morphogenesis and myogenesis, and is involved in vascular development. MEF2C plays an essential role in hippocampal-dependent learning and memory by regulating excitatory synapses and synaptic transmission. It is crucial for neuronal development, distribution, and electrical activity in the neocortex, and necessary for proper development of megakaryocytes, platelets, and B lymphopoiesis. MEF2C is required for B-cell survival and proliferation, efficient IgG1 antibody responses, and normal induction of germinal center B cells. It may also contribute to neurogenesis and cortical architecture development. Isoforms 3 and 4, lacking the repressor domain, are more active than isoforms 1 and 2.
