TGF beta-1은 transforming growth factor beta 사이토카인 초가족에 속하는 폴리펩타이드로, 대부분의 조직에 존재합니다. 이 단백질은 세포외 기질에서 전구체 형태로 존재하며, aV integrin이 RGD 서열에 결합하여 활성화됩니다. 활성형은 TGF beta-1 호모다이머 형태로 존재하며, 다른 TGF beta 계열 단백질과 이합체를 형성할 수도 있습니다.
TGF beta-1은 세포 증식, 분화, 부착, 이동을 조절하며, 다양한 성장 인자를 양적·음적으로 조절합니다. 이 유전자는 종양 세포에서 상향 조절될 수 있으며, 돌연변이는 Camurati-Engelmann disease 및 낭포성 섬유증과 관련이 있습니다.
