Target Information

S. pneumoniae has more than 85 antigenic types determined by capsule antigens.
Although part of the normal respiratory flora, invasion can cause pneumonia and meningitis.
Its polysaccharide capsule protects it from phagocytosis and serves as a major virulence factor.
Infections are typically treatable with antibiotics, though resistant strains are emerging.
