Target Information
This gene belongs to the equilibrative nucleoside transporter family. It encodes a transmembrane glycoprotein localized to the plasma and mitochondrial membranes, mediating cellular uptake of nucleosides from the surrounding medium. The protein functions as an equilibrative transporter sensitive to inhibition by nitrobenzylthioinosine.
Nucleoside transporters are essential for nucleotide synthesis in cells lacking de novo synthesis pathways and for uptake of cytotoxic nucleosides used in cancer and antiviral chemotherapy. Multiple alternatively spliced variants encoding the same protein have been identified for this gene.
