Target Information
Cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) is an essential intracellular second messenger involved in signal transduction following various extracellular stimuli. It mediates the activation of G-Protein Coupled Receptors (GPCRs), the largest family of cell surface receptors, which respond to ligands such as neurotransmitters, hormones, ions, and small molecules. Ligand binding activates G-proteins, which in turn stimulate adenylyl cyclase to produce cAMP. This leads to activation of protein kinases and phosphorylation of target proteins. Because cAMP amplifies ligand responses, it is widely used to monitor GPCR activation and facilitate therapeutic drug discovery.
