Target Information
The Myogenic determination gene (MyoD) was first identified by its ability to convert embryonic mouse fibroblast cells into muscle cells. Forced expression of the MyoD gene (human homolog: myf3) in various normal and neoplastic cells can either induce muscle cell conversion or activate muscle-specific genes that are otherwise transcriptionally inactive.
The regulatory domain of MyoD lies within a 70 amino acid region containing a basic DNA binding motif and a helix-loop-helix (HLH) dimerization motif.
Three other genes share sequence homology with the basic HLH domain of MyoD: myf5, myogenin (myf4), and myf6 (also known as MRF4 and herculin).
