Target Information
The Myogenic determination gene (MyoD) was first identified by its ability to convert embryonic mouse fibroblast cells into muscle cells. Forced expression of the MyoD gene (human homolog: myf3) in various normal and neoplastic cells can induce muscle cell differentiation or activate muscle-specific genes that are otherwise transcriptionally inactive.
The regulatory domain of MyoD lies within a 70-amino-acid region containing a basic DNA-binding motif and a helix-loop-helix (HLH) dimerization motif. Related genes with sequence homology to the basic HLH domain of MyoD include myf5, myogenin (myf4), and myf6 (MRF4, herculin).
