This gene encodes a thyroid-specific transcription factor that binds to the thyroglobulin promoter and regulates thyroid-specific gene expression. It also influences genes involved in morphogenesis.
Mutations or deletions in this gene are associated with benign hereditary chorea, choreoathetosis, congenital hypothyroidism, neonatal respiratory distress, and may be linked to thyroid cancer.
Multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified for this gene.
