Target Information

The ASS1 gene encodes an enzyme that catalyzes the penultimate step in the arginine biosynthetic pathway. There are approximately 10–14 copies of this gene, including pseudogenes scattered across the human genome. The functional gene located on chromosome 9 is responsible for argininosuccinate synthetase activity.
Mutations in this gene cause citrullinemia, and two transcript variants encoding the same protein have been identified.
