Target Information
Thyroid Peroxidase (TPO) is a membrane-bound glycoprotein enzyme essential for thyroid hormone synthesis. It catalyzes the iodination of tyrosine residues in thyroglobulin and the coupling of iodotyrosines to form thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3).
Mutations in the TPO gene can lead to disorders such as congenital hypothyroidism, congenital goiter, and thyroid hormone organification defect IIA. Multiple transcript variants exist, though some full-length forms remain uncharacterized.
Diseases associated with TPO include Thyroid Dyshormonogenesis 2A and Congenital Hypothyroidism.
