Target Information

Protein p21 is a tumor suppressor protein and an inhibitor of Cyclin-dependent kinases (CDKs), transcriptionally activated by p53.
It plays a key role in cellular response to genotoxic stress and regulates cell cycle transitions by inhibiting Cdk1 and Cdk2.
In the cytoplasm, p21 exhibits anti-apoptotic effects by inhibiting caspase 3 and apoptotic kinases ASK1 and JNK.
p21 has dual roles in carcinogenesis, acting both as a tumor suppressor and as an oncogene depending on context.
