Lactose Peptone Water
Details
Lactose Peptone Water is used for lactose fermentation studies. Lactose fermenting species utilize lactose to produce acid which is indicated by change in pH of the medium, by phenol red indicator to yellow colour. Gas produced is entrapped in Durhams tube. Citrobacter freundii, Enterobacter aerogenes, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae are lactose fermenters. They change the colour of medium changes to yellow and gas formed is entrapped as bubble in Durhams tube. Proteus vulgaris, Serratia marcescens, Salmonella species, Shigella species do not ferment lactose.
