Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and are involved in protein synthesis within the mitochondrion. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with approximately 75% protein to rRNA composition, unlike prokaryotic ribosomes. Mammalian mitoribosomes lack a 5S rRNA. The MRPL22 gene encodes a 39S subunit protein of the L22 ribosomal protein family. A pseudogene is located on chromosome 4q, and two transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified.
