Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and assist in protein synthesis within mitochondria. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with approximately 75% protein to rRNA composition, unlike prokaryotic ribosomes where this ratio is reversed. Mitoribosomes lack a 5S rRNA found in prokaryotes. The proteins comprising the mitoribosome vary significantly among species, complicating sequence homology recognition. This gene encodes a 39S subunit protein belonging to the L18P ribosomal protein family. Three polymorphic sites exist, including one causing an extra amino acid near the N-terminus.
