Target Information

Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and assist in protein synthesis within the mitochondrion. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with approximately 75% protein and 25% rRNA composition—opposite to prokaryotic ribosomes. Unlike prokaryotic ribosomes, mammalian mitoribosomes lack a 5S rRNA. The proteins that make up mitoribosomes vary significantly among species, making sequence homology recognition difficult. The MRPL15 gene encodes a 39S subunit protein in the EcoL15 ribosomal protein family, with a pseudogene located on chromosome 15q.
