Target Information

Podoplanin (PDPN, T1A, gp38, Aggrus) is a mucin-type 1 glycoprotein with a molecular weight of approximately 40–43 kDa. It is expressed in various tumors and normal cells, particularly in lymphatic epithelial cells and follicular dendritic cells. Podoplanin localizes in stromal cells of peripheral lymphoid tissue and thymic epithelial cells. As a regulator of lymphatic endothelium, it likely contributes to maintaining the unique morphology of podocytes.

Podoplanin serves as a ligand for CLEC-2, and its expression correlates with increased tumor invasiveness and metastatic potential. It plays a direct role in cell migration, metastasis formation, and tumor cell invasion. Expression can be induced by Src activation of Cas, and recent findings suggest its presence on Th17 cells. Studies indicate a small but distinct population of CD4+ cells from human PBMC expressing podoplanin. Dysfunction of this protein is associated with diseases such as lymphangioma and subglottis neoplasm. It has also been proposed as a marker for lung injury due to its physiological function.
