Target Information

Podoplanin (PDPN, T1A, gp38, Aggrus) is a mucin-type 1 glycoprotein with a molecular weight of 40–43 kDa. It is expressed in various tumors and normal cells, particularly lymphatic epithelial cells and follicular dendritic cells. Podoplanin localizes in stromal cells of peripheral lymphoid tissue and thymic epithelial cells.

As a regulator of lymphatic endothelium, podoplanin plays a role in maintaining the unique shape of podocytes and serves as a ligand for CLEC-2. Its expression correlates with tumors exhibiting invasive and metastatic potential. Podoplanin is involved in cell migration, metastasis formation, and tumor cell invasion. Expression can be induced via Src activation of Cas, and recent studies indicate its presence on Th17 cells. It has been detected on a distinct population of CD4+ cells from human PBMC.

Dysfunction of podoplanin is associated with diseases such as lymphangioma and subglottis neoplasm. It has also been proposed as a marker for lung injury due to its physiological role.
