Target Information

Apoptosis, or programmed cell death, is related to many diseases such as cancer. Apoptosis is triggered by various stimuli including members of the TNF family and inhibited by IAP (inhibitor of apoptosis) proteins. IAP proteins form a conserved gene family including IAP, XIAP/ILP-1/MIHA, and Livin/KIAP that bind and inhibit specific proteases.

A novel member, ILP-2 (IAP-like protein-2), was identified with high homology to ILP-1 but encoded by a distinct gene expressed only in testis of normal human tissues. Unlike ILP-1, ILP-2 does not inhibit Fas or TNF-induced apoptosis but strongly inhibits apoptosis induced by Bax overexpression or coexpression of caspase-9 with Apaf-1. ILP-2 interacts with processed caspase-9, suggesting it is a novel IAP family member with restricted specificity for caspase-9.
