Target Information
Cardiac Troponin I (also known as cardiac-specific troponin I, TnI, Troponin I) is an integral inhibitory protein in cardiac muscle that functions as part of a complex with troponin C (TnC) and troponin T (TnT).
The TnT subunit binds to tropomyosin to form a troponin-tropomyosin complex anchored by TnI binding to actin within muscle thin filaments.
Upon calcium binding to TnC, conformational changes release the inhibitory region of TnI from actin, enabling myosin attachment and muscle contraction.
Measurements of blood TnI and TnT levels serve as key diagnostic indicators of cardiac muscle damage, helping to differentiate angina from myocardial infarction.
Cardiac Troponin I has also been reported to inhibit angiogenesis both in vivo and in vitro.
Mutations in the Cardiac Troponin I gene are associated with familial hypertrophic cardiomyopathy type 7 (CMH7) and familial restrictive cardiomyopathy (RCM).
