MELK (Maternal Embryonic Leucine Zipper Kinase) is a serine/threonine kinase related to the AMPK family, involved in cell cycle regulation and apoptosis. It is overexpressed in various cancers and represents a potential therapeutic target. MELK phosphorylates substrates such as BCL2L14, CDC25B, MAP3K5/ASK1, and ZNF622, influencing cell proliferation, mitosis, and carcinogenesis. It is essential for the proliferation of embryonic and postnatal neural progenitors and may play a role in primitive hematopoiesis.
