Target Information
MELK (Maternal Embryonic Leucine Zipper Kinase) is a serine/threonine kinase related to the AMPK family and is linked to cell cycle regulation. It is often overexpressed in cancers and is a potential target for cancer therapeutics. MELK phosphorylates multiple substrates including BCL2L14, CDC25B, MAP3K5/ASK1, and ZNF622, contributing to apoptosis activation, cell cycle regulation, and carcinogenesis. It is essential for the proliferation of embryonic and postnatal neural progenitors and may also play a role in primitive hematopoiesis.
