SOX2는 SRY-related HMG-box (SOX) 전사인자 패밀리에 속하는 단백질로, 배아 발달 및 세포 운명 결정에 관여합니다. 이 유전자는 중추신경계의 줄기세포 유지에 필수적이며, 위에서의 유전자 발현 조절에도 관여합니다. SOX2 유전자는 SOX2OT (SOX2 overlapping transcript) 유전자의 인트론 내에 위치합니다. SOX2 단백질은 다른 단백질과 복합체를 형성하여 전사 활성 인자로 작용할 수 있으며, SOX2 유전자의 돌연변이는 양측 무안구증, 시신경 저형성증, 증후군성 소안구증 등 심각한 안구 발달 이상과 관련이 있습니다.
