Target Information
CYP11A1 (cytochrome P450C11A1, cytochrome P450scc, cytochrome P450 subfamily XIA) is an enzyme catalyzing the first step of steroid biosynthesis under cAMP signal modulation. It converts cholesterol to pregnenolone in steroidogenic cells, regulated by hormonal control of cholesterol availability. Expression of CYP11A1 is controlled by transcription factor SF-1, requiring an upstream SF-1 binding site for hormonal stimulation. c-Jun and SF-1 act synergistically to activate CYP11A1 expression, and both Forskolin and 8-Br-cAMPS elevate CYP11A1 mRNA levels in interstitial cell monolayers with active adenylate cyclase.
