Target Information
Interleukin 8 (IL-8, CXCL8) is a 72 amino acid pro-inflammatory factor belonging to the CXC chemokine subfamily. It binds to receptors IL-8RA and IL-8RB and functions as a chemoattractant and potent angiogenic factor. IL-8 expression can be induced by various inflammatory stimuli in macrophages and endothelial cells, where it is stored in Weibel-Palade bodies.
Originally isolated from osteosarcoma cells, IL-8 contains the ELR motif (Glu-Leu-Arg) and signals through CXCR1 and CXCR2 receptors. Previous names include NAP-1, GCP-1, MONAP, and protein 3-10C.
IL-8 and related CXC chemokines are clustered on chromosome 4q. Studies indicate IL-8 plays a role in tumor angiogenesis and growth, as well as in bronchiolitis pathogenesis.
