Target Information
Alpha-1 Antitrypsin (Alpha-1-AT) is synthesized in the liver and functions as an inhibitor of proteases such as trypsin, elastase, chymotrypsin, collagenase, leucocytic proteases, plasmin, and thrombin released during inflammatory responses in the lung.
Deficiency of alpha-1-AT leads to unregulated protease activity, contributing to pulmonary parenchyma damage and chronic obstructive lung disease (emphysema). It may also be associated with hepatic cirrhosis in infants and respiratory distress in newborns.
Alpha-1-AT levels increase as an acute phase response to tissue necrosis and inflammation, and are elevated in rheumatoid arthritis, bacterial infections, vasculitis, and carcinomatosis.
