Target Information
Constant region of immunoglobulin heavy chains. Immunoglobulins (antibodies) are membrane-bound or secreted glycoproteins produced by B lymphocytes.
In the recognition phase of humoral immunity, membrane-bound immunoglobulins act as receptors that, upon antigen binding, trigger clonal expansion and differentiation into plasma cells.
Secreted immunoglobulins mediate the effector phase of humoral immunity, eliminating bound antigens.
Each immunoglobulin has two antigen binding sites formed by variable domains of one heavy and one light chain.
Variable domains are generated by V-(D)-J rearrangement and refined by somatic hypermutation for affinity maturation.
Ig alpha (IgA) is the major immunoglobulin class in body secretions. [UniProt]
