Target Information
Constant region of immunoglobulin heavy chains. Immunoglobulins (antibodies) are membrane-bound or secreted glycoproteins produced by B lymphocytes.
During the recognition phase of humoral immunity, membrane-bound immunoglobulins serve as receptors that trigger clonal expansion and differentiation of B lymphocytes into plasma cells upon antigen binding.
Secreted immunoglobulins mediate the effector phase, eliminating bound antigens.
Each immunoglobulin has two antigen-binding sites formed by the variable domains of heavy and light chains.
Variable domains are assembled by V-(D)-J rearrangement and undergo somatic hypermutation for affinity maturation.
IgA is the major immunoglobulin class in body secretions.
