Target Information
The ACE gene encodes an enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of angiotensin I into angiotensin II, a potent vasopressor and aldosterone-stimulating peptide. Angiotensin II regulates blood pressure and fluid-electrolyte balance and is a key component of the renin-angiotensin system. Variations in this gene, including the presence or absence of a 287 bp Alu repeat element, have been linked to differences in enzyme levels and cardiovascular conditions. Two major alternatively spliced variants produce active somatic and testicular isozymes, with additional variants identified but not fully characterized.
