Target Information
Muscarinic cholinergic receptor 2 (CHRM2) is an acetylcholine receptor that functions as a presynaptic autoreceptor inhibiting acetylcholine release. The M2 receptor mediates smooth muscle contractility and is implicated in neurological conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease, where selective loss of M2 receptors occurs in cortical and hippocampal regions. Increased M2 receptor heterozygosity has been linked to depression in women. Expression has been observed in multiple brain regions (cerebellum, cortex, hippocampus, medulla, striatum, thalamus) as well as in lung and prostate tissues.
