Target Information

BRCA1 (Breast and Ovarian Cancer Susceptibility Protein 1) is a nuclear phosphoprotein that plays a key role in maintaining genomic stability and acts as a tumor suppressor. It forms a large multi-subunit complex known as BASC (BRCA1-associated genome surveillance complex) with other tumor suppressors and DNA damage sensors.
BRCA1 associates with RNA polymerase II and interacts with histone deacetylase complexes, contributing to transcription regulation, DNA repair of double-stranded breaks, and recombination.
Mutations in BRCA1 are responsible for approximately 40% of inherited breast cancers and over 80% of inherited breast and ovarian cancers. Alternative splicing affects its localization and function, with several disease-associated variants identified. A related pseudogene exists on chromosome 17.
