Target Information
Cluster of differentiation 8 (CD8) is a type I transmembrane glycoprotein of the immunoglobulin receptor family involved in T-cell signal transduction, differentiation, and activation.
CD8 is primarily expressed on T cells as a disulfide-linked heterodimer of CD8α and CD8β, functioning as a co-receptor with the T-cell receptor (TCR) for MHC class I molecules.
It is also found as a CD8α homodimer on subsets of T cells, NK cells, monocytes, and dendritic cells.
Binding of MHC-I/peptide complexes to CD8 triggers recruitment of Lck kinase, leading to cytokine production, motility, and cytotoxic T lymphocyte (CTL) activation.
Activated CTLs are essential for pathogen and tumor cell clearance, and their differentiation is enhanced by IL-2, IL-12, and TGF-β1.
