Target Information
ATP citrate lyase (ACLY) is the key enzyme responsible for cytosolic acetyl-CoA synthesis in many tissues. It functions as a tetramer (~440 kDa) of identical subunits and catalyzes the conversion of citrate and CoA into acetyl-CoA and oxaloacetate, coupled with ATP hydrolysis to ADP and phosphate.
Acetyl-CoA produced by ACLY is essential for lipogenesis and cholesterogenesis. In nervous tissue, ACLY may also contribute to acetylcholine biosynthesis. Two transcript variants encoding distinct isoforms have been identified for this gene.
