Target Information
Fatty acid binding proteins (FABP) are small (approximately 13–14 kDa) intracellular proteins with a high degree of tissue specificity. FABPs are cytoplasmic proteins that bind long-chain fatty acids and play an important role in their intracellular utilization.
There are at least six distinct types of FABP, each showing a specific pattern of tissue expression. Due to their small size, FABPs rapidly leak from chemically damaged or dying cells, leading to elevated serum levels.
Liver FABP is a sensitive marker for liver cell damage both in vitro and in vivo. Damaged tissues show reduced or absent FABP expression, aiding in histological recognition of injury. L-FABP is also a marker for rapid hepatocyte lysis in toxicology assays and for detecting liver damage during and after transplantation.
