Target Information
Interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β) is a proinflammatory cytokine expressed by monocytes, macrophages, and dendritic cells. It is synthesized as a 31 kDa inactive pro-form that accumulates in the cytosol and is cleaved into the active 17 kDa form via inflammasome activation. The active IL-1β plays a key role in innate host defense by inducing other proinflammatory cytokines and initiating acute-phase responses. IL-1β signals through IL-1RI and IL-1RII receptors and its activity is modulated by IL-1 Receptor Antagonist (IL-1RA). Elevated IL-1β levels are associated with chronic inflammatory conditions, and neutralizing antibodies against IL-1β have potential therapeutic value.
