Target Information
This gene encodes a transmembrane receptor commonly referred to as DC-SIGN, expressed on dendritic cells and macrophages. It plays a key role in the innate immune system by recognizing diverse pathogens including parasites and viruses. The protein has three main domains: an N-terminal transmembrane domain, a tandem-repeat neck domain, and a C-type lectin carbohydrate recognition domain. The extracellular region functions as both a pathogen recognition and cell adhesion receptor. The neck region enables homo-oligomerization, enhancing multivalent ligand binding. Variations in the neck domain repeats can affect ligand-binding ability. DC-SIGN is closely related to L-SIGN (GeneID 10332) but differs in ligand-binding properties and tissue distribution. Alternative splicing generates multiple variants.
