Target Information
Cecropins are antimicrobial peptides first isolated from the hemolymph of Hyalophora cecropia, from which the term “cecropin” was derived. They lyse bacterial cell membranes, inhibit proline uptake, and cause membrane leakage. Cecropins are small proteins (31–37 amino acids) active against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria and form a major component of insect innate immunity. Variants isolated from other insects are known as bactericidin, lepidopteran, or sarcotoxin, sharing structural similarity. Cecropin P1, an intestinal antibacterial peptide from Sus scrofa (pig), also belongs to this family, along with Cecropin A and Cecropin B.
