Product Specific Information
This antibody reacts with CD48 (Blast-1), a 40–47 kDa GPI-anchored extracellular membrane protein of the immunoglobulin superfamily. It is widely expressed on hematopoietic cells but negative on granulocytes, platelets, and erythrocytes.
Target Information
CD48 (Blast-1) belongs to the CD2 subset of the Ig superfamily, including CD2, CD58, CD84, CD150, CD229, and CD244. These molecules mediate homotypic or heterotypic adhesion by binding to other Ig family members. CD48 serves as a high-affinity ligand for 2B4 and a low-affinity ligand for CD2, playing roles in NK and NK-T cell regulation, eosinophil activation, and immune responses in infectious and allergic diseases. It is strongly expressed on lymphocytes and monocytes, weakly on granulocytes, and absent on platelets, fibroblasts, epithelium, and endothelium. CD48 is a marker for detecting GPI anchoring defects in paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH) and may serve as a pharmacological target for allergic airway diseases.
