Target Information
ALKBH5 (RNA demethylase ALKBH5) is a dioxygenase that demethylates RNA by oxidative demethylation. It specifically removes N(6)-methyladenosine (m6A) modifications, the most prevalent internal modification of messenger RNA (mRNA) in higher eukaryotes. This demethylation affects mRNA processing and export.
ALKBH5 can also demethylate N(6)-methyladenosine in single-stranded DNA (in vitro). The enzyme requires molecular oxygen, alpha-ketoglutarate, and iron for activity.
