Target Information

The protein encoded by the classic MBP gene is a major constituent of the myelin sheath of oligodendrocytes and Schwann cells in the nervous system.
MBP-related transcripts are also present in the bone marrow and immune system. These mRNAs originate from the long Golli-MBP gene, which includes three additional upstream exons.
Alternative splicing of Golli and MBP transcription start sites produces two sets of MBP-related transcripts and proteins:

1. Golli-MBP hybrid proteins containing N-terminal Golli sequences linked to MBP sequences.
2. Classic MBP proteins, well characterized as essential components of myelin.

This complex gene structure is conserved across species, indicating its importance in gene regulation and function.
