Target Information
Matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) family proteins are involved in the breakdown of extracellular matrix during physiological processes such as embryonic development, reproduction, and tissue remodeling, as well as in pathological conditions like arthritis and metastasis.
MMP12 is secreted as an inactive proenzyme and activated by cleavage. The active enzyme degrades soluble and insoluble elastin and may play a role in aneurysm formation and emphysema development.
The MMP12 gene is part of an MMP gene cluster located on chromosome 11q22.3.
