Target Information
The PON2 gene encodes a member of the paraoxonase gene family, located on chromosome 7. The protein is membrane-bound and ubiquitously expressed in human tissues. It acts as a cellular antioxidant, protecting cells from oxidative stress. Its hydrolytic activity against acylhomoserine lactones suggests a role in defense against pathogenic bacteria. Mutations may be associated with vascular disease and diabetes-related phenotypes. Multiple alternatively spliced transcript variants exist.
