Target Information
C-reactive protein (CRP) is a major cyclic, pentameric acute-phase protein composed of five identical, noncovalently bound, nonglycosylated subunits. Each subunit consists of 206 amino acids with a molecular weight of approximately 24 kDa.
CRP is synthesized in the liver, and its plasma concentration increases markedly during inflammatory responses. It functions as an initiator of the classical complement cascade, binds to nuclear components such as chromatin and histones, and plays a crucial role in innate immunity.
CRP acts as an opsonin, activates monocytes/macrophages, and serves as a scavenger during cell necrosis. Elevated CRP levels are associated with an increased risk of hypertension and cardiovascular disease.
