Target Information

This gene encodes a neuropeptide widely expressed in the central nervous system, influencing physiological processes such as cortical excitability, stress response, food intake, circadian rhythms, and cardiovascular function.
The neuropeptide acts through G protein-coupled receptors to inhibit adenylyl cyclase, activate MAP kinase, regulate intracellular calcium levels, and activate potassium channels.
A polymorphism resulting in leucine 7 to proline substitution is associated with elevated cholesterol, higher alcohol consumption, and potential risk for metabolic and cardiovascular diseases.
