Target Information

CEA (Carcinoembryonic Antigen, CD66e) is synthesized during fetal development in the gut and re-expressed in intestinal carcinomas and other tumors. It belongs to the immunoglobulin superfamily, consisting of one N-domain and six constant-like domains (A1–A3, B1–B3).
Antibodies to CEA help identify the origin of metastatic adenocarcinomas and distinguish pulmonary adenocarcinomas (60–70% CEA+) from pleural mesotheliomas (rarely or weakly CEA+).
CEA functions as a cell adhesion molecule involved in tissue differentiation, angiogenesis, apoptosis, tumor suppression, metastasis, and immune response modulation. Multiple transcript variants exist, though not all are fully characterized.
