Target Information
Adipose tissue plays a crucial role in regulating metabolic and immune processes by producing and secreting bioactive molecules known as adipokines. The adiponectin/ACRP30 family and its structural and functional paralogs, the C1q/tumor necrosis factor-alpha-related proteins (CTRPs 1–7), are highly conserved adipokines.
Unlike adiponectin, which is expressed only by differentiated adipocytes, CTRPs are expressed in a wide variety of tissues and are believed to act primarily on liver and muscle tissue to regulate glucose and lipid metabolism.
Structural studies of adiponectin have revealed a link between TNF and C1q-containing proteins, suggesting a shared ancestral gene related to innate immunity. Multiple isoforms of mouse CTRP4 have been reported.
