Target Information
Adipose tissue plays a major role in regulating metabolic and immune processes by secreting bioactive molecules known as adipokines. The adiponectin/ACRP30 family and its paralogs, the C1q/TNF-alpha-related proteins (CTRPs 1–7), are highly conserved adipokines.
Unlike adiponectin, which is expressed mainly in differentiated adipocytes, CTRPs are expressed in various tissues and act primarily on liver and muscle to regulate glucose and lipid metabolism.
Structural analysis of adiponectin suggests an evolutionary link between TNF and C1q proteins, indicating a shared ancestral gene related to innate immunity. CTRP5 has been implicated in age-related macular degeneration.
