Target Information
Cytokeratins (CK) are intermediate filaments found in epithelial cells, both keratinizing (e.g., skin) and non-keratinizing (e.g., mesothelial cells). Although not typical endothelial markers, cytokeratins are sometimes present in microvascular endothelial cells.
There are at least 20 cytokeratin types (40–70 kDa, pI 5–8.5) identifiable by two-dimensional gel electrophoresis. CK proteins are divided into two main classes:
- Type I (acidic polypeptides)
- Type II (basic polypeptides)
Each epithelial cell expresses at least one member of each class. Monoclonal antibodies against cytokeratins are valuable tools for tumor identification and classification.
