Target Information
Cytokeratins (CK) are intermediate filaments of epithelial cells, found in both keratinizing (e.g., skin) and non-keratinizing tissues (e.g., mesothelial cells). Although not typical endothelial markers, some microvascular endothelial cells also express cytokeratins.
There are at least 20 different cytokeratins ranging from 40–70 kDa with isoelectric points of 5–8.5, identifiable by two-dimensional gel electrophoresis.
CK proteins are classified into two groups: type I (acidic) and type II (basic). Each epithelial cell expresses at least one member from both families.
Monoclonal antibodies to cytokeratin proteins serve as valuable markers for tumor identification and classification.
