Target Information

Cytokeratins (CK) are intermediate filaments of epithelial cells, found in both keratinizing tissues (e.g., skin) and non-keratinizing cells (e.g., mesothelial cells). Although not a traditional marker for endothelial cells, cytokeratins are also present in some microvascular endothelial cells.
At least 20 different cytokeratins (40–70 kDa, pI 5–8.5) can be identified by two-dimensional gel electrophoresis.
Cytokeratins are classified into two groups:

  • Type I: acidic polypeptides
  • Type II: basic polypeptides

Each epithelial cell expresses at least one member from each class.
Monoclonal antibodies to cytokeratin proteins are useful markers for tumor identification and classification.
