Target Information
The inhibin alpha subunit joins either the beta A or beta B subunit to form a pituitary FSH secretion inhibitor. Inhibin negatively regulates gonadal stromal cell proliferation and exhibits tumor-suppressor activity. Serum levels of inhibin reflect the size of granulosa-cell tumors, serving as a marker for both primary and recurrent disease. In prostate cancer, expression of the inhibin alpha-subunit gene is often suppressed and undetectable in poorly differentiated tumor cells. Because expression varies across gonadal and extragonadal tissues, inhibin may function as both a growth/differentiation factor and a hormone.
